PFAS - Turning The Microscope on Troubled Waters
Weber Shandwick
Client: Royal Society of Chemistry
We expect our drinking water to be safe – that goes without saying. So, when the Royal Society of Chemistry discovered how thoroughly the UK’s waterways are polluted by harmful forever chemicals called PFAS and how weak the UK’s legislation on the issue is, they wanted to raise public awareness and convince parliamentarians to do something about it.
To address the issue, we quite literally put a group of chemicals on the map to raise awareness of the risk they present to human health and the environment. Our campaign inspired action with 400 letters (and counting!) sent to MPs and multiple questions submitted to the UK and Scottish Parliaments. Crucially, five NGOs, more than half of the UK’s water companies and five separate government bodies engaged directly with the Royal Society of Chemistry on tackling the PFAS problem.
