Well Pharmacy first appeared on the UK’s high streets in 2014 but the history of the business goes back much further than that.

The company by its current name emerged following the acquisition by the Bestway Group of the Co-operative Group’s pharmacy operations which had been a major provider of community pharmacy services for over 70 years. Well is now the UK’s largest independent pharmacy chain and the third largest overall. It operates 760 pharmacies across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. In addition to its extensive bricks and mortar presence, the business offers an online pharmacy service which can be accessed via a dedicated app and at well.co.uk. The company also retails a wide range of health, wellbeing and beauty products at shop.well.co.uk. In 2022, Well had a new leadership team and a new strategic direction. To ensure its team of 4000 colleagues were aligned to a revised vision for the future, the business set about developing a new purpose and embedding it into every aspect of its business and every stage of the employment lifecycle. Well also understood that by establishing a strong purpose, that both engaged its existing employees and appealed to future hires, it could become a destination employer. This would help it overcome a number of significant talent acquisition challenges which had the very real potential to inhibit its further success and growth.
