Michael Hanbury-Williams
Head of Sustainability & Purpose, EMEA , UM
Michael is the EMEA Head of Sustainability & Purpose for UM, and is responsible for implementing UM's climate action plan‚ covering areas such as Media Decarbonisation, Operational Efficiency, Responsible Media Investment, Education & Innovation, and Client Excellence. His role is to ensure UM leads the media industry as part of the transition to a Net Zero economy, creating work on behalf of clients that minimises climate impact, invests in diverse, sustainable, and responsible platforms and publishers, and that lives up to UM's belief that media can truly be a force for good. He sits on the cross-industry working groups for Ad Net Zero and the IPA's Media Climate Charter, and is responsible for embedding sustainable tools and frameworks into UM's business practices. UM's successful journey to Net Zero emissions by 2030 or sooner, with an emerging focus on "Ecoffectiveness" or "Return on Carbon" as a campaign KPI, will be driven by Michael and the broader sustainability taskforce within UM. His experience within the media industry over the last 11 years before his pivot to Sustainability was in Data Strategy and Programmatic campaign management, helping UM's clients futureproof the way they generate, use, and make a market advantage out of their first party data. He's particularly enthusiastic about the emerging intersection between data, effectiveness, efficiency and sustainability within the digital media landscape.
